Definitions of God

Maybe they have the last , but it’s wrong.

According to the online Dictionary, YourDictionary.com, ‘God’ is defined as:

  • The (personification of the) laws of nature.
  • An impersonal and universal spiritual presence or force.
  • An image that is worshiped; idol.
  • A person or thing deified or excessively honored and admired.
  • Used variously, and in interjectional phrases, as an oath and as an expression of relief, determination, surprise, anger, etc.

I find these “definitions” reveal more about those at YourDictionary, than they do God.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines ‘God’ as:

  • The supreme reality
  • The being who men worship as creator and ruler of the universe
  • a being or object believed to have more than natural attributes and powers and to require man’s worship
  • a person or thing of supreme value

Close, but too vague to have an opinion

In Roget’s International Thesaurus, Fourth Edition, ‘God’ is defined as:

  • Lord, Jehovah, Providence.
  • The Supreme Being
  • God Almighty
  • Almighty God
  • The Alpha and the Omega; the infinite being
  • Omnipotent, Omnipresent
  • All knowing, all merciful, all Holy
  • King of Kings, Lord of Lords
  • The Maker, the Creator of all things

Roget pulled those definitions straight from the Bible. I have seen these in the Bible myself, along with a few other ones. My favorite? “Hearer of Prayers”
