Let the Games Begin!

Bloganuary writing prompt
Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.

Ever since I can remember, family gatherings meant playing games- cards and dominoes. After Thanksgiving dinner, we would work on a jigsaw puzzle. I say “we,” but I wasn’t much help when I was a kid. I was not included in all the games that were played. I would hang out in the family room regardless, just to listen. You never heard such arguing! My family was the original “Family Feud.”

Meanwhile, in a different town in California, my hubby’s family played games, mostly cards and dominoes. They were different from the ones my family played but just as competitive and loud. At the first gathering, my hubby took me to, I must have learned 7 new games. I was also told that to be in their family, I had to play pinocle. After many painful attempts to teach me that game, an exception to the rule was decided. I believe that not playing with me made the game fun for them again. I truly sucked.

Fast-forward to the present, and our kids and their kids are continuing with this tradition. The games have changed over the years, especially when hubby’s Uncle taught us ‘Hand and Foot.’ Everyone loves to play that one. I recommend that anyone not familiar with that game Google it. There are a million variations, but decide on one and have a blast!

The Top Fun Five

List five things you do for fun.

I have too many hobbies for just one person, but they all don’t belong on this list.
The top five are:

  • Writing- This includes novels, letters to loved ones (or editors), and, of course, blogging.
  • Quilting – Especially baby quilts and special ones.
  • Dancing – Just because I don’t go clubbing anymore doesn’t mean that Alexa and I can’t groove at home.
  • Card games – Hand & Foot, Hearts, Oh Hell, Knock Poker, Poker, Go Fish, Uno, War, and so on.
  • Hosting Camp Grandma – Planning a week in the summer with a granddaughter and doing whatever strikes our fancy.
  • I’m looking forward to reading the responses for this BlogJanuary!

About Jodi

Bloganuary writing prompt
Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.

I used to hate my name. My mom heard the name while watching the movie The Yearling. The character was a young boy. That fact did not stop my mom, oh no. She wanted her firstborn to be called Jodi. So, Jodi, I am.

People cannot spell my name. They put a “Y,” or they add an “E.” It would not be so annoying if at least my friends and family knew how it was spelled. And did I mention it is a boy’s name?

My little sister lucked out. She got a lovely feminine name because my mom saw Gone With the Wind before she was born. Her name? Melanie.

I’m grateful that Mom did not watch horror or sci-fi movies. I might have been named Godzilla.
