Peeve of the Day

Who keeps spreading the word about me?

I just wrote a post about happiness being temporary. Today proves that theory. I needed a crowbar to empty my PO box this morning. It was crammed full of holiday catalogs, advertisements for insurance, and a multitude of letters asking for money.

Paperwork Mountian

I do have a few causes I donate to. The American Diabetes Association, for one. I am a diabetic, and I like to get their magazine. That being said, I am tired of them sending me requests to donate twice a week. Stop killing trees, for Pete’s sake. I send money when I can. When I feel like it. I’m a diabetic, so it’s not like I could forget. Sheesh!

Over time, my address spread to other organizations that needed money. I have lived at this address for almost 10 years. I counted the number of agencies that were after me. In just the last week – 21 different ones. Does everyone get that many? New ones appear often, and that tells me my name & address are still being passed around. Probably, for long after I die, they will keep mailing me. Creepy thought.

When Jesus calls me from the grave, I worry his arms will be full of my junk mail. But that is just silly. I’m sure that He will delegate that to a sweet angel, who will help me recycle it.

What Makes YOU Happy?

Happiness does not come from people, places, or things. So before you get ready to argue with me, let me explain…

Many things make people happy. Pleasant surprises, good news, your favorite food for dinner, looking forward to seeing family & friends. Grandchildren. Being successful. Happy is a great thing, but it is temporary most of the time.

Why Can’t I Have Both?

Your world returns to normal and routine again before you know it. Now you have happy memories, like movies to play in your head. Maybe you took videos and can play memories on a device. I usually don’t because when I’m involved with something, I tend to forget about photos until it is over and too late. My friends, who are grandma’s, think it is absolutely horrid because I don’t take a ton of pictures and videos. But, hey, I’m too busy having fun with my grandkids to be their lead photographer. Why doesn’t hubby take photos? He is taller, his hands are steadier, and he’s not stuck in the kitchen half the day.

I will stop there. I can tell there is an underlying rant stirring up. Did you notice?

Dennis Miller
The Master Ranter

Rants that bubble up out of nowhere when you are talking about something different can be the best ones. However, today is not the day to rant because I want to focus on things that make me happy. So for those who enjoy focusing on peeves and annoyances, don’t worry. Your day will come. Perhaps sooner than we think.

So – whether you use your fingers to count, write up a list, or make notes on your phone, get comfy and close your eyes a minute and focus on things that make you smile, laugh, feel all warm and tingly, make your day, give you sudden emotions (click here for definition). Not the BIG ticket items or philosophically deep things. More of every day and silly things that make your life enjoyable and more fun.

  • Things that make me happy:
    • wearing pajamas
    • hearing kids giggle
    • when my dog hugs me
    • a mug of hot coffee
    • watching snow fall
    • hubby holding my hand
    • writing
    • dancing
    • rock

OK. I told you some of mine. Please share some of yours in the comments! When you comment, I know you are out there, and that makes me very happy 🙂

Definitions of God

Your Dictionary Logo
Maybe they have the last , but it’s wrong.

According to the online Dictionary, YourDictionary.com, ‘God’ is defined as:

  • The (personification of the) laws of nature.
  • An impersonal and universal spiritual presence or force.
  • An image that is worshiped; idol.
  • A person or thing deified or excessively honored and admired.
  • Used variously, and in interjectional phrases, as an oath and as an expression of relief, determination, surprise, anger, etc.

I find these “definitions” reveal more about those at YourDictionary, than they do God.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines ‘God’ as:

  • The supreme reality
  • The being who men worship as creator and ruler of the universe
  • a being or object believed to have more than natural attributes and powers and to require man’s worship
  • a person or thing of supreme value

Close, but too vague to have an opinion

In Roget’s International Thesaurus, Fourth Edition, ‘God’ is defined as:

  • Lord, Jehovah, Providence.
  • The Supreme Being
  • God Almighty
  • Almighty God
  • The Alpha and the Omega; the infinite being
  • Omnipotent, Omnipresent
  • All knowing, all merciful, all Holy
  • King of Kings, Lord of Lords
  • The Maker, the Creator of all things

Roget pulled those definitions straight from the Bible. I have seen these in the Bible myself, along with a few other ones. My favorite? “Hearer of Prayers”
