Time For a Gratitude List

Yep.

Or as Grandma would put it- “Count your blessings!”

The weather has turned colder and gloomier, matching my personality of late.  I have been neglectful of my “Be the Sunshine” self.  My grooming habits have disintegrated into “who cares?”  Even all the ‘forbidden’ foods I’m stuffing into my face are not helping me feel better.

I know I am depressed & wallowing in self-pity.  I also know that I am smarter than this and I have many things to be grateful for that I should be focusing on.  And I will, grandma, I promise.

BUT FIRST…

I need to rant a bit.

Remember in late February when the coronavirus was declared a Pandemic?

As cases and death tolls piled up all over the US, it reminded me of Stephen King’s The Stand and the plague that wiped out 99.9% of the population.  Anyone who read the book or watched the mini-series on TV thought of that story.  I came upon a tweet by Stephen King that said coronavirus was nothing like that plague – it was not nearly as bad. Someone tweeted him in reply “Dude!  Have you read that book?”  This amuses me greatly every time I think about it.

I hate that there is always a “catchphrase” when there is a catastrophe or shocking event. The one that really irritates me is, “The new normal.”  It’s new for sure, but it is not normal. No one wants it to be either.

Suddenly – all the toilet paper vanished. No one remembers people buying mass quantities. Sanitizer solutions, alcohol, and disinfectant wipes vanished. Frozen meats and dairy items, also vanished.  And if you wanted any bread – you had to make it yourself.  We wondered what would be next.

Everything is coming back to the shelves now. Except for the T.P.  Stores have to ration 1 roll per person, per day.  Rationing?  Like in WWII?  Not only paper for personal hygiene, but the kind you write letters on.  This makes me wonder if the stationary is a TP back up plan.  I wonder about many other things too.  Is diarrhea a symptom, BTW?

For instance, I wonder if the Senate Hart Building ran out of T.P., or if the White House has a surplus of darn near everything under the sun.  All those press conferences in March and we did not hear anything interesting and pertinent – like hoarding or shortages.  The local news was full of these interesting (and often disturbing) things.

The other thing I wonder is are people obeying the “Stay at Home, Save a Life” philosophy?  Maybe most are. I would like to think so, but it’s upsetting when I make my twice-monthly trip to the grocery store and there is traffic in town like normal (not the new normal but the old normal). People out and about without masks, even though our county is providing masks for free to everyone who wants one.

I bet they would wear one if they could see the dreadful spores floating and bouncing about.  Or not.  I have been told, “I’m not sick.” Or “I don’t believe in wearing a mask.”  Do you believe in death?  Because that is what is happening all over the world.  Moron!

Why can’t there be laws against stupid?  Grrrr!  That is a topic for a completely different post for another day when I am feeling grouchy.

Thanks for listening.  I feel much better now!

Stay tuned for my next post: Counting my Blessings.

If you Hate Reminiscing – STOP Reading!

For me, Sundays are days of meditation and reflection.  Sometimes I feel like sharing these.  Because my hubby has heard it all before, and we are under “Stay at Home” orders, I’m going to write a post about one day out of many summer days spent in Missouri.

In the summer of 1977, I sat in a theater in St. Louis watching Star Wars: A New Hope.  Back then we thought it was the first and only one.  HA!

I enjoyed the story – a surprise to me because I’m not into outer space stories and weird creatures. What I really was there for was to see Mark Hamill on the big screen.  I got the hots for him when I saw him on a TV movie back in1975.

The big screen did not disappoint. He was even more than I hoped for.  He has dimples!  Sigh.

As my friend Eileen and I made our way through the crowded theater, I felt shell-shocked.  When we exited the building, loud alarms were sounding off.  I (being from California) never heard a tornado warning system before.  I tell you this – you cannot ignore this sound.  Well, maybe if you were completely deaf.  However, people scurrying to their cars may tip you off that something is going on.

I started to feel panicked.  I knew what you needed to do in case of a tornado, but there was no basement or root cellar in the theater parking lot. I looked to Eileen for some Missouri wisdom.  She was not worried. After one quick look up at the sky, in every direction and not seeing a tornado, she shrugged and unlocked her car.

“Where are we going?”  I asked.

“To the McGuire’s basement.”  Eileen lived in Florissant and my Aunt & Uncle’s house was down the street from the theater.  Their basement was vast and comfy – I knew because I was staying down there. My cousin Maggie and I were using the space as a living area during my visit.  This way we did not bother anyone trying to sleep, while we talked and laughed all night long.

During the 2-minute ride, the sky opened up and a deluge of water came crashing down.  My cousin’s front door was 7 feet from the driveway.  We had to be wrung out when we got there. My Aunt escorted us to the backyard and handed us beach towels to strip off our clothing under.  The remainder of the afternoon we spent sipping hot chocolate and working a jigsaw puzzle – in the basement.

Every day was an adventure at my cousin’s house. Actually, it was not her house or Missouri, or un-California weather that was adventurous, but us together, no matter where we were, what we were doing – we had a wonderful time.  We had some kind of ‘Force’ with us back then – and to this day. In case you are wondering – it is NOT the Dark Side.

What about the tornado?  We didn’t know. It did not pass by the McGuire’s neighborhood, and that was all we cared about.

Inspiration

“Inspiration is not found within, but rather comes from discovering it in others”

   – Quo

Quo shows Mollie his true appearance to make a point.

So, who is this Quo, you ask.  Why am I quoting him?  Well, Quo is a fictional character in one of my novels.   His assignment is to be a Guardian Angel for the protagonist of said novel.  Anyway, his hobby, one of many,  is famous quotes and sayings.

Above is his very first, soon to be famous, quote.  He asked me to please spread it around.  Well, actually his very words were, “Get it out there!”  “Mingle it around!”

Now you know about Quo and his soon-to-be-famous quote.  When we are allowed to mingle again I hope that you will help me.

My-To-do-this-week list:

  • Get More Sleep
  • Persevere your Goals (i.e. get quilting!)
  • FOCUS!
  • Be the Sunshine
  • Love
  • Read the Bible each day
  • Get More Sleep
  • Write letters & make phone calls
  • Prepare for Hubby Appreciation Day (next Thurs)
  • Deliver finished masks for the County
  • Get More Sleep

It seems that Quo may have influenced the author as well as the character.  My original list was much shorter…
