To Keep, or not to Keep

Bloganuary writing prompt
Where can you reduce clutter in your life?

That is the question.

I have clutter in every aspect of my life. As a writer, I have kept short stories and novel drafts over the years. I even have the first spiral notebooks in which I wrote poems and short stories. I wrote most drafts using pen and paper because it was easier than pounding on an old manual typewriter.
I have filing cabinets and bookshelves full of binders of drafts and notes that ‘I might want to revisit.’ I do go back every 3 years or so to reread some of my favorites. Occasionally, I even tinker with one, trying to be inspired. I don’t remember ever breathing life back into any former efforts.

Old Notebooks

Another area of my life with clutter is the guest room that I call my sewing/craft room. I have been “building up my stash” since 2013 when I joined a quilt guild. Almost every week, we have fabrics sitting on our “free table.” I have found some really cool stuff on that table. Someday, I need to dig in and make a lot more quilts for charity and use that fabric up. I have cupboards full, boxes under the bed, and even some bins in the basement. Some may call that hoarding. I call it preparation.

I have way too many cookbooks. I started my own cookbook back when my kids were young. My notes are semi-organized, and most recipes have been taste-tested. My goal was to give them a cookbook when they went off on their own. The kids are in their 40s now, so I guess that plan is moot. Perhaps by the time I have great-grandchildren…

I sometimes have these days where my mindset is, “You don’t need all this stuff!” And that is true – I don’t need it. However, I may want it at some point in the future. I suppose that is why I keep it. Just in case.

And the Nominees Are…

Can you tell I have a thing for the Oscars?

It’s been a good month for my little blog. First the Liebster Award nomination, and a couple of days after that, I was nominated for the Versatile Blogger Award. :-).  versatileblogger111 I  admit that my head swelled a bit, causing my brain to stop having any post ideas at all. Go figure.

Matt, author of The Matticus Kingdom, kindly nominated Not Pretending  for this award. Please visit his kingdom, you will be happy you did!

Thank you, Matt, for not only the nomination, but for considering my posts versatile.

All this time I believed I was a flibbertigibbet*.  And what do ya know, I was just being versatile. 😉   Upon receiving this award there are rules to follow (there’s always a “but”…)

Versatile Blogger Rules

  • Display the Award Certificate on your website
  • Announce your win with a post and link to whoever presented your award
  • Present 15 10 awards to deserving bloggers
  • Drop them a comment to tip them off after you’ve linked them in the post
  • Post 7 interesting things about yourself.

My nominations for deserving & versatile blogs go to:

  1. My Meandering Trail   This gal is going to be hiking the Appalachian Trail this year and taking her readers along with her!
  2. Dorky Deb  She’s more fun than dorky!
  3. Aavicenna  This blog introduces you to the world of fragrance. The way perfumes are described you can almost smell them. The photography is awesome.  Very Classy.
  4. Life in General  A great place to find life stories, humor, photos and inspiration. A truly versatile blog!
  5. Charlotte’s Web  A unique and somewhat spooky site. Beware if you have arachnophobia :-0
  6. Ramblings of a Quickwit   She is funny and real. I guess that makes her real funny! (Please forgive me, I’m out of sorts today from dealing with medical insurance and the IRS. And I didn’t even speak to a human)
  7. Whatimeant2say   What she does say is hysterical. The adventures of Wonderbutt are fun too.
  8. notquiteold  She is gracefully aging – with resistance. She draws too.
  9. HagFest  A blog celebrating women, that has posts about humor, books, politics, religion, writing, family – you name it. Talk about versatile.
  10. Maternity Peeve  A writer, film critic, designer, gardener and teacher, now a stay at home mom, shares her adventures in her clever blog.

Congratulations Everyone!

7  Wacky (Interesting) Things About Myself:

  1. When in grade-school, I would walk home talking to myself, sometimes making up songs and skipping. It was a long 2-mile walk. (No snow – just weirdos wanting to give me rides)
  2. My little sister excelled at being a pain-in-my-butt ever since she was born. She died last year, but even that hasn’t stopped her.
  3. When I was 12, I wanted to be a stand-up comic. Like Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers were at the time. When I told my parents, they laughed at me, and rolled their eyes.
  4. My right leg is longer than my left. Most people don’t notice, until I mention it. (Oops!)
  5. My favorite outfit is flannel pajamas and penguin slippers
  6. I have a crush on Dr. Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds
  7. I spend more time reading blog posts than writing them.

Now I have fulfilled my obligations for this award. I can get back to the 38 things I’ve put off  to do this  😉

*FYI – if your family never met Rednecks or mountain folk: “Flibbertigibbet (flibər tē jib′it) noun referring to a person who is  irresponsible &  flighty. A silly, scatterbrained, or garrulous person.”

Your welcome  🙂

Blurry Christmas
Christmas went by like a blur

Or if you prefer, PDHB. After all, every noteworthy syndrome, disorder, and disease has an acronym.  PDHB happens to me every year and I have to suck it up and take it like a woman. Suck being the operative word.

I find out when I’m downloading the 6 GB of pictures and video that I took of the festivities, most of them are blurry. Great. Although I recognize my daughter and granddaughter when blurred, I am bummed. I console myself with the knowledge that I am the only one taking pictures, and this family would have no visual history if not for my efforts. Such as they are.

By the time I truly felt in the Christmas spirit, it was over. Just like that. Now it’s time to prepare for the new year. To me that means transferring all the family & friends birthdays, anniversaries, etc.  from my 2011 GIANT CALENDAR to the 2012.

Giant Calendar
I wasn't kidding!

For 2012 I have made goals, but not resolutions. One of them is to continue developing this blog. I’m toying with the idea of making it more professional looking (at least less pink).

Stay Tuned…….
