If you Hate Reminiscing – STOP Reading!

For me, Sundays are days of meditation and reflection.  Sometimes I feel like sharing these.  Because my hubby has heard it all before, and we are under “Stay at Home” orders, I’m going to write a post about one day out of many summer days spent in Missouri.

In the summer of 1977, I sat in a theater in St. Louis watching Star Wars: A New Hope.  Back then we thought it was the first and only one.  HA!

I enjoyed the story – a surprise to me because I’m not into outer space stories and weird creatures. What I really was there for was to see Mark Hamill on the big screen.  I got the hots for him when I saw him on a TV movie back in1975.

The big screen did not disappoint. He was even more than I hoped for.  He has dimples!  Sigh.

As my friend Eileen and I made our way through the crowded theater, I felt shell-shocked.  When we exited the building, loud alarms were sounding off.  I (being from California) never heard a tornado warning system before.  I tell you this – you cannot ignore this sound.  Well, maybe if you were completely deaf.  However, people scurrying to their cars may tip you off that something is going on.

I started to feel panicked.  I knew what you needed to do in case of a tornado, but there was no basement or root cellar in the theater parking lot. I looked to Eileen for some Missouri wisdom.  She was not worried. After one quick look up at the sky, in every direction and not seeing a tornado, she shrugged and unlocked her car.

“Where are we going?”  I asked.

“To the McGuire’s basement.”  Eileen lived in Florissant and my Aunt & Uncle’s house was down the street from the theater.  Their basement was vast and comfy – I knew because I was staying down there. My cousin Maggie and I were using the space as a living area during my visit.  This way we did not bother anyone trying to sleep, while we talked and laughed all night long.

During the 2-minute ride, the sky opened up and a deluge of water came crashing down.  My cousin’s front door was 7 feet from the driveway.  We had to be wrung out when we got there. My Aunt escorted us to the backyard and handed us beach towels to strip off our clothing under.  The remainder of the afternoon we spent sipping hot chocolate and working a jigsaw puzzle – in the basement.

Every day was an adventure at my cousin’s house. Actually, it was not her house or Missouri, or un-California weather that was adventurous, but us together, no matter where we were, what we were doing – we had a wonderful time.  We had some kind of ‘Force’ with us back then – and to this day. In case you are wondering – it is NOT the Dark Side.

What about the tornado?  We didn’t know. It did not pass by the McGuire’s neighborhood, and that was all we cared about.

Inspiration

“Inspiration is not found within, but rather comes from discovering it in others”

   – Quo

Quo shows Mollie his true appearance to make a point.

So, who is this Quo, you ask.  Why am I quoting him?  Well, Quo is a fictional character in one of my novels.   His assignment is to be a Guardian Angel for the protagonist of said novel.  Anyway, his hobby, one of many,  is famous quotes and sayings.

Above is his very first, soon to be famous, quote.  He asked me to please spread it around.  Well, actually his very words were, “Get it out there!”  “Mingle it around!”

Now you know about Quo and his soon-to-be-famous quote.  When we are allowed to mingle again I hope that you will help me.

My-To-do-this-week list:

  • Get More Sleep
  • Persevere your Goals (i.e. get quilting!)
  • FOCUS!
  • Be the Sunshine
  • Love
  • Read the Bible each day
  • Get More Sleep
  • Write letters & make phone calls
  • Prepare for Hubby Appreciation Day (next Thurs)
  • Deliver finished masks for the County
  • Get More Sleep

It seems that Quo may have influenced the author as well as the character.  My original list was much shorter…

Out of Ideas?

Here are some, courtesy of the Digital Credit Union (DCU).  I especially like the last idea!

Fun Family Activities While Staying Indoors

School closures, social distancing, and adjusted work arrangements are changing everyday life for families.  Staying indoors can be extra challenging during rainy spring days.  Looking for a break from watching movies and television?  Here are some different ideas to help kids (and their parents!) look on the bright side while they’re cooped up indoors.

Break out the board games.  Now’s the perfect time to dust off some old favorites.

Work on a jigsaw puzzle.  Jigsaw puzzles can be a fun way to keep everyone’s minds engaged. Set one up on an extra table and take turns piecing it together, or work on different sections at the same time.

Build an indoor fort.  If an extra table isn’t being used for a game or puzzle, consider using it to help build a fort complete with blankets, pillows, and flashlights. It could become a playhouse or a quiet space to read.

Bake and decorate.  Baking together can be fun and creative, especially if you make cookies or cupcakes that can be frosted and decorated.

Learn a dance routine.  Kids might already be aware of modern dance moves with apps like TikTok, so they may be willing to learn some classics like the Macarena or the Electric Slide. Dancing can help you laugh and exercise as a family and work off the decorated baked goods.

String holiday lights.  Add some cheer to your home with lights you may have on hand. It can be a nice backdrop for dancing, too!

Try a new or silly hairstyle.  Have some hot rollers? Curious if you can achieve a beehive ‘do? Staying in is a good opportunity to experiment with a “home hair salon.”

Bring the outdoors in through art.  Have the kids create drawings or other crafts of things like the sun, rainbows, birds, flowers, and more. Then, hang them around your home! Consider making some to mail to friends and family members, such as grandparents who would love a boost of happiness!

Make a fun family memories BINGO or charades game.  Have some family memories that you could use to create your own games?  You may even be able to print your own BINGO cards and call sheet to save for holidays and future family gatherings.

Go for a drive in your PJs.  If you need a break from home and are able to hop in the car to see some new sights, make it fun by wearing PJs. Consider picking up a take-out order. You’ll be helping to support your local restaurants and treating your family to a special dinner after a fun-filled day of indoor activities!

Do you have some family favorites you would like to share with everyone also on house arrest?  Oh, Please!  Share them in the comments so we may all enjoy them too
